All you get for 4 hours hard buck stalking is a short arsed terrier with attitude!

Could it be better?

Make sure you have the sound up. Sometimes it makes it all the worth while when the alarm goes at 3.45 to go stalking.

Worthy Pen

The first work session took place on Saturday with myself, Stephen, Kevin and new shoot member David attending.
Worthy Park Pen was the project for the morning to encourage more ground cover inside the pen so when the poults arrive they have somewhere to bury into and get away from the weather and each other. The picture shows Stephen and David creating a gap to let some sun light into the top half of the pen.
Whatever we cut back was used to create clumps of cover. Extra rubble was also placed around the outside of the pen to give the fencing more strength to protect from charlie.
The fencing needs a few more cable ties in some sections plus the electric fence will need to be repaired nearer the release date. Once this has been done then the pen should be ready to go. (Although more ground cover will be required - tops of fir tree's etc)

Boiled & Chilled

Saturday afternoon jobs, boil buck head & clean chiller unit.
The first job of the day entailed being a guide for one of Roger's French clients although no bucks were spotted. Roger's client missed his buck 3 times! Oops. After this a few hours office work then onto buck trophy work plus cleaning out the chiller that I got during the week. Had to make room for it in the garage which was a good excuse to clear and dump items that we all store away thinking that one day it might be useful but never use.

Chiller unit

Have hunted high and low over the last 12 months for a decent size chiller for the garage i.e. to store the deer carcass. Didn't want to pay a lot of money and today struck gold with this chiller that was on ebay plus it's only five miles away to collect.
Now just need to arrange a decent size van.

First Buck Of The Year

After several stalks since the start of the buck season success was made yesterday morning at around 6.30am. This five pointer was first spotted after he and two does were spooked by a couple of partridges that took fright from a oil seed rape field at the top of the farm. The small group ran onto the large field to my left and proceeded up the middle before turning right behind a hedgerow. After a slow and careful stalk I glassed the deer again who had gone into another rape seed field. This needed another quiet walk until I could get around the other side and hopefully sit and wait until the buck would come out in between the crop and a hedgerow. It was only a ten minute wait until one of the does poked her nose out closely followed by the buck. One look down the scope to confirm the target and the trigger was squeezed. He dropped on the spot with a good heart/lung shot. The distant was approx 70 - 80 yards.
